How To Install A Surge Protector

Surge protectors are different from other lightning protection devices, such as lightning warning systems, lightning rods, etc. Merchants often do not provide installation services. What is the installation method of surge protective device? How should we install surge protection device without problems? What should we pay attention to when installing?

First of all, you need to understand its basic information, whether it is installed in a single-phase system or a three-phase system, and its basic interface position. The "L", "N", and "PE" on the surge protector represent the live wire, the neutral wire, and the grounding wire, respectively. The lightning protector is connected in parallel with the protected equipment in the system, that is, the power line is connected to the "L" and "N" wiring holes of the lightning protector, and the grounding wire is connected to the lightning protection grounding busbar from the "PE" wiring hole. The specific wiring method is shown in the figure below.

In GB 50343, 6.5.1 and 5.4.3 standard definitions are as follows:

1. The surge protectors of each level of the power line should be installed at the entrance of the line into the building, the interface of the lightning protection zone, and close to the protected equipment. The connecting wires of each level of surge protector should be short and straight, and their length should not exceed 0.5m, and they should be firmly fixed.

2. Before wiring, make sure that the cross-sectional area of the access wire meets the technical requirements. The cross-sectional area of the copper wire of the first-level SPD connecting the phase line is not less than 6mm², and the cross-sectional area of the connecting ground wire is not less than 10mm². The cross-sectional area of the copper wire of the second-level SPD connecting the phase line is not less than 4mm², and the cross-sectional area of the connecting ground wire is not less than 6mm². The wire connected to the surge protector should be short and straight, and the total length of the lead should not exceed 0.5m.

3. When the line length between the voltage switch type surge protector and the voltage limiting type surge protector is less than 10m, and the line length between the voltage limiting type surge protectors is less than 5m, a decoupling device should be installed between the two-level surge protectors. When the surge protector has the function of automatic energy coordination, the line length between the surge protectors is not limited.

Installation precautions:

Before installation, it must be ensured that the power supply is turned off to ensure personal safety.

Pay attention to check whether all screws are tightened to avoid heating of the wires due to poor contact, which will affect the electrical performance.

The lightning arrester does not require special maintenance at ordinary times. You only need to regularly check whether the wire connection is loose and whether the working status indication is normal.
